Switzerland is the cultural and geographical heart of Europe. It is located in the Alpine region of central Europe and a land area of some 41,300 square kilometers inhabited by 7 million people. This country has three distinct geographical regions, the Jura Mountains (these cover a small area in the northwest), the Mitterlland (a central plateau), and the Alps (the largest area of the country in the south and east). The capital city of Switzerland is Bern.
This landlocked country has no coastline. It share land borders 5 neighboring countries. In the north there is Germany, from the west to northwest there is France, Austria and Liechtenstein is to the east and finally Italy is to the south.
Switzerland is located at the convergence of several linguistic regions in Europe. German is by far the most common language. Two-thirds of the population speaks this language well. About one-fifth of the Swiss speaks French and one-tenth speaks Italian. Ironically, pure Swiss language, which is Romansh, is spoken by only less than 50,000 people.
